Crews responded to the Vita Gardens Apartments at the corner of Atlantic and Monmouth avenues at around 9:04 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 18, the Asbury Park firefighters union said in a Facebook post. First responders found heavy smoke and fire erupting from the first floor.
The fire quickly spread to the upper floors and a large column of smoke could be seen from the firehouse. Crews from Long Branch, Neptune, and Wannamassa were called to the scene, along with off-duty Asbury Park firefighters.
Firefighters launched an aggressive attack, using multiple hand lines to battle the flames while searching through the building. While no residents were inside, crews successfully rescued a dog from one unit.
The fire was brought under control after two hours of intensive efforts. The New Jersey chapter of the Red Cross said volunteers were assisting 17 people from eight families with emergency housing, food, clothing, and other essential needs.
The city started a donation drive to support the fire victims. Donations of new or gently used clothing, toiletries, gift cards, and money are being accepted at city hall or the Main Street firehouse through Friday, Jan. 3, 2025.
